The Connection test in the Control Panel measures the speed your build upload will really get: it sends real 16 MB test pieces from your browser to the Eagle 3D Streaming storage, the same way an upload does, and tells you which upload setting suits your connection. It takes up to about a minute and a half and uses none of your storage.
Your build goes from your browser to the nearest Cloudflare entry point, and from there to the Eagle 3D Streaming storage in Western North America. A general speed test measures the line to some nearby server on a different route. Your internet provider can have a good route to one and a congested route to the other at the same moment - so a speed test site can show a fast line while uploads here are slow. The Connection test uses the exact path an upload uses.
| Test | What it measures | Shows the speed of an upload here? |
|---|---|---|
| A general speed test site | The line to some nearby server | No - different route |
| Dropbox / Google Drive upload time | Often only the changed parts of the file | No - see Dropbox uploads fast - why is my build upload slower? |
| Utilities → Connection test | Real 16 MB pieces sent to our storage, as an upload sends them | Yes |
An upload sends your build in 16 MB pieces, several at a time. The test does the same in three steps, each stopped after 30 seconds so a slow line still finishes in about a minute and a half:
| Step | Pieces sent at the same time | Test pieces |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 2 |
| 2 | 2 | 4 |
| 3 | 6 | 6 |
The test pieces are deleted afterwards and do not count against your storage. Your result is saved with your account, so the support team can look at it with you.
For each step the table shows the speed, how many pieces failed, and how long a 5 GB build would take. The line under the table names the best setting: set it in My Account → Settings → Upload settings (pieces at a time) before your next upload.
| What the test shows | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Fast at every step, no failures | The connection is fine | Keep 6 at a time |
| Fastest at 2, failures at 6 | The connection cannot hold several uploads together | Choose 2 at a time |
| Failures already at 2 | The connection drops under load | Choose 1 at a time |
| Slow or failing at every step | The route to the storage is congested or unstable right now | Try another network or later - or let our servers fetch the build from a link: Upload assistance |
In Your Projects an upload that stopped can be continued: choose the same file again and press Continue upload - the pieces already sent are kept. Choosing fewer pieces at a time (above) makes a stop less likely on an unstable line.
Write to (Email / Discord) with a screenshot of the Connection test table and the time you ran it. The numbers show whether the slowdown is on the route to the storage or somewhere else.
